EV vs gas calculator

Is an EV cheaper to fuel than a gas car?

Compare home charging with gasoline using your electricity price, EV efficiency, gas price, MPG, and monthly driving.

EV cost includes charging losses. Gas cost = miles ÷ MPG × gasoline price. This compares energy/fuel only.

For the EV

Use the rate you actually charge at.

If you have time-of-use electricity pricing, enter your overnight or charging-period price rather than a general household average.

For the gas car

Use real MPG if you have it.

Dashboard or trip-computer fuel economy usually gives a more relevant comparison than a generic MPG assumption.

What the comparison includes

This tool compares driving energy—not total vehicle ownership cost.

The EV side uses miles driven, miles per kWh, charging efficiency, and electricity price. The gasoline side uses miles driven, miles per gallon, and gasoline price. That makes the result useful for comparing energy or fuel cost for the same amount of driving.

Purchase price, depreciation, insurance, financing, maintenance, registration, and taxes are outside the calculation.

Charging losses matter

The EV needs more energy from the wall than the battery receives.

If a vehicle consumes 30 kWh of battery energy for a trip, the utility meter will usually record more than 30 kWh because charging is not perfectly efficient. The charging-efficiency input accounts for that difference before electricity cost is calculated.

Use realistic prices

Time-of-use electricity and local gasoline prices can change the result quickly.

For home charging, enter the rate that applies when you normally charge if your utility uses time-of-use pricing. For gasoline, use the grade and local price you would actually buy. A few cents per kWh or a large change in gasoline prices can materially shift the monthly comparison.
